Research: German philosophy since Kant with special emphasis on hermeneutics, aesthetics, phenomenology, and philosophy of history.

Selected Publications: Author of Dilthey, Philosopher of the Human Studies (Princeton 1975, 1992); Imagination and Interpretation in Kant: The Hermeneutical Import of the "Critique of Judgment" (Chicago, 1995). Co-Editor of a multi-volume translation of Dilthey's Selected Works with Princeton UP (Volume 1: Introduction to the Human Sciences, Volume 2: Understanding the Human World, Volume 3: The Formation of the Historical World in the Human Sciences, Volume 4: Hermeneutics and the Study of History, Volume 5: Poetry and Experience) and of Dilthey and Phenomenology (University Press of America, 1987); The Ethics of History (Northwestern, 2004). Neo-Kantianism in Contemporary Philosophy (Indiana, 2010); Recent Contributions to Dilthey's Philosophy of the Human Sciences (fromann-holzboog, 2011). Currently at work on a book entitled Interpretation, Judgment and Critique: An Orientational Hermeneutics.
